The following is a CD list of the symphony No.8 in C Minor by the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). These are some of my favorite Bruckner recordings. The coda of the 4th movement of the 8th evokes the feeling of flying and ascending up and up into the sky. It is the epitomy of the beauty in his music!! The flow, subtlety, detail and structural consistency are crucial for the performance of his symphonies. The depth of his music can only be revealed via insight and intuition. Mere technical brilliance will not communicate the underlying message. Overtly aiming for the dramatic effect in the fashion of Beethoven or Wagner by the drastic change in the tempo will destroy the structure of Bruckner symphonies. Performances listed below show remarkable structural stability and consistency throughout the performance.

The discography description is based on the following key:

C = conductor, O = orchestra, R = recorded date and place, N = CD number and Label, VPO = Vienna Philharmonic, BPO = Berlin Philharmonic, CSO = Chicago Symphony Orchestra, DG = Deutsche Grammophon, V = version, * = Yutaka recommends, ** = Yutaka highly recommends

One of the greatest Bruckner conductors and one of the very few non-European to make the extensive Bruckner recordings. According to the Asahina biographical publication, as of June 1997, there were three versions of the complete Bruckner symphony live recordings conducted by Asahina and 7 versions of Asahina's Bruckner 8th. For a summary of the complete Bruckner symphony recordings by Asahina and various versions of 8th, see the following publication:
Asahina Takashi Eiko no Kiseki (In Japanese). 1997 Tokyo, Japan: Ongaku no Tomo sha.

His VPO Symphony #8 (1st 15:32 2nd 14:00 3rd 21:44 4th 19:43). The last/fourth movement tempo is the fastest comparable to Horenstein. Other Schuricht Bruckner symphony recordings are 3, 5, 7 and 9
In addition to Asahina, Knappertsbusch and Matacic, he is one of the greatest Bruckner conductors. I highly recommend his 7th recorded in September, 1964 with Hague Symphony Orchestra.
